ASUU Plans Nationwide Strike Over Unresolved Issues
ASUU issues a nationwide strike threat
A key source of dispute for the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) is the Federal Government's inability to appoint Governing Councils for Federal Universities. As a result, the ASUU has issued a stark warning of a possible statewide strike.
Emmanuel Osodeke, the president of ASUU, voiced the union's displeasure during a news conference at the ASUU national secretariat in Abuja.
ASUU criticized the President Bola Tinubu-led Federal Government for what it saw as their casual attitude toward academic issues in Nigerian Federal Universities.
Furthermore, the union expressed disapproval of the recent university system compensation increases of 25% for other academic staff members and 35% for professors.
They believed that the government might decide to stop giving these increases at any time.
Prof. Emmanuel Osodeke emphasized during the current press briefing at the University of Abuja that ASUU has given the Tinubu-led government plenty of time to address these issues.
The union, believing it to be unlawful and against long-standing university norms, voiced concerns about the dissolution of governing councils at federally controlled universities.
