THE Anambra State Government, through the Ministry of Women and Social Welfare, has intervened to rescue Chidiebere Otenyi, a domestic violence victim who lives in Ezinifite, Aguata Local Government Area.

Martha Umenweke, who is in her late 60s, has been captured and handed over to police for further investigation and prosecution at Awka's Children, Sexual and Gender-Based Violence Magistrate Court.

Chidimma Ikeanyionwu, the Media Aide to the state Commissioner for Women and Social Welfare, Ify Obinabo, announced the development on Friday, May 3.

According to Ikeanyionwu, the victim was saved after a whistleblower informed the ministry of the worrying scenario.

The statement underscored the ministry's prompt response to the report and Commissioner Obi's desire to ensure justice for the victim.

Chidiebere Otenyi, a 19-year-old from Nkanu in Enugu State, described her terrible experience, citing physical violence and harassment by her employer, Martha Umenweke, in response to theft allegations.

Further research revealed that Chidiebere had received severe punishment, including malnutrition, from her employer, who also allegedly downgraded her to Primary 3 despite her true educational level.

The matter has been turned over to the police for further investigation and prosecution at the Children, Sexual, and Gender-Based Violence Magistrate Court in Awka.

This incident followed a February instance in which Anambra State-based lawyer Adachukwu O was accused of abusing her 11-year-old housekeeper, Happiness Nwafor.

The case drew national attention, prompting involvement from Minister of Women Affairs Uju Kennedy-Ohanenye, who slapped a N2 million bounty on Adachukwu when she went into hiding.

Following a public outcry, Adachukwu turned herself in to police.
