A businessman was shot and killed by a police officer in Aba, the state's commercial center, according to the police in Abia State.

Emmanuel Okocha, a businessman, was shot and killed on Friday in the state after reportedly declining to bribe some police officers.

The deceased Okocha was from Abiriba, which is a hamlet in the southeast state's Ohafia Local Government Area.

The agents were purportedly members of the state's Rapid Response Squad of law enforcement. Even though the victim had all of his driver's license and car paperwork, it was said that they still requested a bribe from him.

The operator has been apprehended, according to state police spokesman Maureen Chinaka, who confirmed the development.

The agent was identified as Obagi Njok, a police corporal assigned to the state's Abayi Police Division, by Chinaka, an assistant superintendent of police.

“The officer has been apprehended, and necessary disciplinary procedures have been initiated. Appropriate disciplinary actions and sanctions will be effected soonest, and he will face the full course of appropriate administrative and legal consequences,” Chinaka stated.

According to a police spokesperson, the prosecution of the officer will involve the family of the deceased business owner and local authorities.

“The Abia State Police Command states without prevarication that the incident is unfortunate, and regrettable,” she stated.

She noted that the victim's family and loved ones have received condolences from the state's police authorities.

“Abia State Police Command remains steadfast in upholding professionalism and the rule of law. We unequivocally condemn any act of misconduct, unprofessionalism, and indiscipline among our officers,” she stated.
