Jonathan, Shettima Will Address State Police In A National Dialogue
AT a national debate hosted in Abuja on Monday by the house of representatives, Vice President Kashim Shettima will discuss state police.
This information was revealed in a statement released on Sunday by Musa Krishi, Tajudeen Abbas's special media and marketing adviser.
Plans to host a national security conference were revealed by Abbas in January.
Speaking at the conference, the speaker noted that specific areas for legislative intervention and broad proposals will be proposed.
The bill, which has 14 sponsors including deputy speaker of the house Benjamin Kalu, seeks to move the 1999 constitution's use of the term “police” from the exclusive legislative list to the concurrent list.
Top government representatives, members of the foreign community, traditional and religious leaders, and other pertinent parties will talk about the proposed decentralization of the current unitary national police force at the summit, according to Krishi.
A commission to investigate the establishment of state police was set up by the federal government on February 15 in response to the recent wave of unrest around the nation. The bill for second reading was approved by the house a few days later.
The keynote discuss will be given by Abbas, while special remarks will be given by former president Goodluck Jonathan and former head of state Abdulsalami Abubakar.
Among speakers at the event include Elsie Attafuah, a country representative for the United Nations Development Program (UNDP), Annette Gunter, a German ambassador to Nigeria, Richard Montgomery, the British high commissioner to Nigeria, and Clement Nwankwo from the Policy and Legal Advocacy Centre (PLAC).
The others are Godswill Akpabio, the president of the Senate; Ibrahim Geidam, the Minister of Police Affairs; Kayode Egbetokun, the Inspector General of Police (IGP); George Akume, the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF); Femi Gbajabiamila, the President's Chief of Staff; Christopher Musa, the Chief of Defense Staff; and Abdulrahman Abdulrazaq, the Governor of Kwara and Chairman of the Nigeria Governors' Forum (NGF).
'Pathways to peace: Reimagining police in Nigeria' is the theme of the debate, which takes place at the Abuja Continental Hotel.
