Businessman from Abia is shot and killed by police over refusing to pay bribes.

Businessman Emmanuel Michael Okocha of Abia was fatally shot by a trigger-happy police officer.

The Abiriba Community in Ohafia LGA of the state has so demanded justice in response to the police officer's killing of its native.

The businessman, who was born in Abariba, and MCC Abayi-Aba are said to have been shot dead by Nigeria Police Force personnel from the Rapid Response Squad on Friday, April 19, for not accepting a bribe, even though they had a valid driver's license.

Emmanuel Michael Okocha, an Abia businessman, was fatally shot by a trigger-happy policeman.

Because of this, the Abiriba Community in the state's Ohafia LGA has demanded justice after the police officer killed one of its indigenous members.

The community claims that on Friday, April 19, businessman Abariba and MCC Abayi-Aba were shot and killed by Nigeria Police Force officers from the Rapid Response Squad for not accepting a bribe, even though the businessman had a full driver's license.

In the car, a relative seated next to the deceased nagged, “We drove from Abiriba on Wednesday, 17th of April 2024 and entered Aba through Osisioma flyover, on approaching opposite Abayi Girl's Secondary School, a team of Police Officers stopped us and demanded the car documents and driver's licence of Okocha which he quickly availed them.

“After the check and control of the papers, the Police Officer returned the documents to him and started demanding a tip (bribe).

“The late Emmanuel replied to the officer that he had nothing to give him after wasting his time and started moving his car to leave the checkpoint only for another officer standing in front to turn his rifle and shoot at him without provocation. The victim was taken to a nearby hospital and died following gunshot injuries sustained.”

The Abiriba Community is waiting on the government to step in and resolve the issue.

They wrote, “The Abiriba Community has been wounded and are saddened by the unprovoked, reckless and brutal murder of their promising young son. The philanthropic and kind-hearted father of the victim, Late Chief Michael N. Okocha whose time and wealth touched numerous lives and whose commitment/drive to Community Development is still visible in Abiriba after two decades of his demise must be watching from the spirit world to see how his beloved Abiriba will rally to ensure that those who brutally cut-short the life of his beloved son are served the justice they deserved.”

“This ugly incident is a constant reminder that the Government needs to do more to checkmate the excesses of men and women in her Security Agencies. They should be made to understand that their job is to protect lives not to take it and firearms are only meant to be used in extreme danger to defend themselves against deadly attack.”

“Late Mr Emmanuel Michael Okocha should not only Rest in Peace, he must Rest in Justice.”
