Obi Discusses Increase In Electricity Rates

OBI stated on Sunday, April 7, that it is best to raise taxes for the wealthy.

Recall that on Tuesday, April 2, the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC), authorized a pricing rise for Band A users.

That, in Peter Obi's opinion, was the answer to Nigeria's electrical problems.

He emphasized that it makes sense to raise tariffs for urban areas that can pay them.

“The solution is very simple (referring to electricity tariff hike), you can increase the tariff for those in areas where they can afford it.

“We must do a lot in power generation because it has taken so long. But we have to take into consideration that the majority of Nigerians are suffering.

“So we need to support people in those areas to be able to live and be able to produce something.

“When they start to produce something, we are pushing them out of poverty, and that's where my theory of moving from consumption to production comes in,” he said.

12 states, including Lagos and Kano, have finalized preparations to begin producing electricity in accordance with the Electricity Act of 2023.

It has been reported that a few of these states have passed legislation governing the energy market and are awaiting clearance from the Nigerian energy Regulatory Commission (NERC) to establish independent regulatory bodies distinct from the federal government-owned NERC.
