Nigerian Nurse Based In UK Faces Charges Over Misconduct
A Nigerian nurse may be removed from the UK NMC registry because of her misconduct
Elizabeth Offier, a Nigerian nurse, faces the possibility of having her registration with the United Kingdom Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) revoked as a result of her misbehavior.
The story started when an NMC tribunal suspended Offier for six months due to his misconduct-related diminished fitness to practice.
The Professional Standards Authority for Health and Social Care (PSA) expressed doubt about this decision because it believed the penalty did not adequately protect the interests of the public.
The PSA appealed the ruling in March 2023, asking the court to reverse it and issue a striking-off order.
The legal battle ended on March 26, with Justice Sheldon sanctioning a 21-page ruling that came about after a hearing on March 6 at the Royal Court of Justice in London.
She was also suspended for an extra year for failing to show up for a panel review that was called in August 2023.
Simultaneously, she was not present at a panel review that was called in August 2023, which led to a 12-month suspension extension.
The main point of Offier's violations is that she was accused of lying to her employers on several occasions, and her breaches were allegedly motivated by money.
Moreover, on April 22 and 23, 2019, while working night shifts at the North Tees and Hartlepool NHS Foundation Trust, she is accused of failing to give three patients their IV antibiotic treatment and forgetting to give two more patients their insulin.
She is also accused of fabricating medical records to show that medication was administered when it hadn't.
To make matters worse, on October 11, 2019, she applied to First Call Healthcare Agency ostensibly without disclosing her previous employment history with Pulse and Standby Agency, another registered agency.
She was working unsupervised on December 7, 2019, because she failed to notify First Call of the conditions regarding the administration of medication that NMC had imposed.
When First Call questioned Offier about the conditions she was under, she responded by saying that the NMC makes these kinds of announcements, therefore she didn't mean to withhold any relevant information.
Offier's reputation within the medical community may be in jeopardy due to the seriousness and regularity of her infractions, which have clouded her professional integrity.
