NCOS Searches IDP Camps For Fleeing Prisoners

THE Suleja Medium Security Custodial Centre in Niger State is the source of escapees. The Nigeria Correctional Service (NCOS) has stepped up efforts to find and apprehend them.

This comes after Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, the Minister of Interior, visited the Niger Custodial Center, where 119 prisoners fled after a rainstorm damaged the facility, and declared that the government would relocate several correctional facilities to improve infrastructure and security.

Tunji-Ojo emphasized the need for better infrastructure and security as well as the urgency of moving numerous correctional facilities to more appropriate locations due to congestion.

Additionally, he reaffirmed the ministry's efforts to design a more efficient penal system and gave assurances that such instances would not occur in other facilities across the country.

Samson Duza, the Federal Capital Territory NCOS spokesperson, revealed that, in relation to the event, 119 prisoners first ran away, and 50 were later taken into custody by law enforcement.

Speaking anonymously, security officials disclosed that a considerable number of prisoners had been apprehended again and that there would be heightened efforts to recover prisoners from earlier jailbreaks, which would involve keeping an eye on IDP camps.

However, the NCOS is making every effort to guarantee the swift repatriation of the escaped prisoners and reinforce security protocols to avert other violations.
