Lagos Government To Demolish Landmark Beach Resort
THE Lagos government will demolish the Landmark Beach resort to provide room for the Lagos-Calabar road project's coastal route
This was stated in a letter dated March 19, 2024, addressed to property owner and business magnate Paul Onwuanibe. The letter was signed by Tpl. Shomolu O., Deputy Director (Development Matters Department), on behalf of the permanent secretary of the Ministry of Physical Planning and Urban Development.
The state government stated in the letter that the areas of the property that are being demolished, including the Members Area, Kids and Bay Arena, Beach Resort, and Lagos Beach Club, are 50 meters inside the proposed road project's right of way.
The beach resort, according to Onwuanibe, the Landmark site, is worth at about $200 million.
According to Onwuanibe, the beach resort is valued at over $200 million. It is a Landmark site that supports over 80 enterprises and generates over 4,000 direct jobs.
Additionally, it brings in about N2 billion, or $1.5 million, in tax income annually.
The Federal Ministry of Works, along with the Lagos state government, had addressed the corporation in two different national newspapers over the demolition of a 103-kilometer section of the 700-kilometer Lagos-Calabar coastal route.
The state authorities advised him to submit claims for compensation and advised him that his property is 50 meters inside the project's Right of Way Alignment.
“Consequently, the affected portion shall be removed in overriding public interest, to pave way for the road construction project from seven days of serving this notice.
“In view of the above, I am to request you to forward all documents supporting your ownership of the property to the Permanent Secretary, Lands Bureau, Block 13 and 14, The Secretariat, Alausa, Ikeja,” the publication.
Victoria Island will be the site of the first section of the N1.06 trillion freeway. With five lanes on either side of the dual carriageway, a train track in the center, and spurs connecting to northern Nigeria, the superhighway will pass through nine coastal states in Nigeria.
Having invested millions of borrowed dollars in the development of the resort, he predicted that its demolition would be a catastrophic loss.
