In the throes of a fraud controversy, South African billionaire Markus Jooste takes his own life



Markus Jooste, a billionaire from South Africa, committed suicide; he was discovered dead from a gunshot wound close to Cape Town.


The former CEO of Steinhoff was hit with a large fine on March 20th, which was related to an accounting fraud case. Police said there is no suspicion of foul play and they are investigating.


"It is alleged that the victim sustained a gunshot wound at around 1520 (local time) at Kwaaiwater and succumbed to death on his way to hospital," Western Cape police spokesperson Colonel Andre Traut said in a statement.


Steinhoff has faced numerous lawsuits and significant financial losses since then.


Jooste stated in 2018 that he was not aware of any accounting issues when he left the company in December 2017 during a South African parliamentary investigation.


Moreover, South African officials have been looking into allegations of fraud involving him.


The late business magnate leaves behind his spouse, Ingrid. Two girls and a son were born to marriage.


The late business mogul is survived by his wife, Ingrid. They had a son and two daughters.
