The French Football Federation (FFF) has implemented new rules that forbid Muslim players from fasting during Ramadan while working with the national team. As a result, midfielder Mahamadou Diawara left the French Under-19 squad.

According to ESPN, Diawara chose to quit and head back to his club, Lyon, because he did not feel comfortable with the new regulations, which are in place for all levels of competition, from the U16 to the senior squad.

The FFF has announced that Diawara is back at his club and has called up Dehmaine Tabibou Assoumani of Nantes to take his place.

A “principle of neutrality” is written into the organization's founding statutes, according to FFF president Philippe Diallo, who announced new regulations regarding players fasting for Ramadan while on France duty on Wednesday in an interview with the French newspaper Le Figaro. Diallo further stated that the measures “ensure that religion does not interfere with an athlete.”

According to the current FFF regulations, players who are called up by the French national teams are not allowed to fast during the month of Ramadan. Instead, they must adhere to the regular schedule of the teams' practices and organization.

Ramadan, which started on March 10 and is anticipated to end around April 10, will not allow players to fast while at the nation's Clairefontaine training facility. Instead, they will have to make up for the days they missed of fasting after the conclusion of the religious holiday.
