Chinese Man convicted For Murdering Girlfriend In Kano

THE Kano High Court has convicted Chinese national Frank Geng-Quangrong to death by hanging for the 2022 murder of his girlfriend in Kano.

The decision, which found the accused guilty of the offense, was made on Tuesday, March 26 by Justice Sanusi Ado-Ma'aji.

Following his conviction, Geng-Quangrong received a death by hanging sentence.

The case began in September 2022, when he was taken into custody by the police on suspicion of criminal homicide in connection with the death of his girlfriend, Ummukulsum Sani, 22, at her Janbulo quarters in Kano.

The Chinese national testified before the State High Court during the trial that he had no intention of killing his Nigerian lover, even though he had admitted to stabbing her with a knife.

Geng-Quangrong described the incident's occurrences during cross-examination by state Director of Public Prosecution Aisha Mahmoud, the prosecution's attorney.

He recounted the events of that fateful day, when Ummukulsum forced him onto the bed and he stabbed her, not intending to kill her, while also attempting to take her to the hospital.

“I escaped from the room through the window because the door was locked from the outside and i wanted to take her to the hospital but the police promptly arrived and arrested me,” he stated.

Geng-Quangrong revealed his N1.5 million monthly salary. Since coming to Nigeria in 2019 to work as a marketing and sales manager at BBY Textile Company, he has been living in Railway quarters, Kano.

The prosecution contended that, in spite of his explanation, the offense was in violation of Penal Code Law Section 221(b).
