2 Students Died In A Stampede In Nasarawa State

Two students tragically die in a stampede at Nasarawa University during palliative supplies distribution.

A stampede that happened in the university's convocation area on Friday, March 22, claimed the lives of two female students at Nasarawa State University, Keffi.

The government of Nasarawa State had chosen the square as the location for the palliative medicine distribution.

The Nasarawa State administration has set aside the square as the location for the palliative care distribution.

Overcrowding caused a stampede that resulted in multiple injuries and two verified deaths of female students who suffocated in the ensuing turmoil, according to a university source.

The Nasarawa State Students Association's National President, Yunusa Baduku, verified the event and said that numerous students involved in the stampede had been sent to adjacent hospitals for emergency care.

He said, “Seriously, what happened this morning at the Nasarawa State University, Keffi, is uncalled for, and very pathetic.

“After our arrangement for the distribution of palliatives to the students which was to hold at the University's convocation square, they (students) suddenly arrived at the venue in their numbers and overpowered the security.

“They broke through the gate into the Convocation square where the bags of rice was to be shared.

“Unfortunately, most of our female students sustained several degrees of injuries, while others got suffocated because of the population at the venue for the distribution of the palliatives.”

This is reminiscent of an earlier occurrence in Lagos, where the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) declared that food sales would not be permitted after a tragic stampede occurred at the NCS Old Zonal Headquarters in Yaba.

A pregnant woman was among the seven people who died in the chaos that resulted from suspected thugs trying to break into the Customs office compound.

The Comptroller General of Customs' National Public Relations Officer, Chief Superintendent Abdullahi Maiwada, revealed the sales exercise's suspension. The program's goal was to provide seized food goods at subsidized rates in order to help those who are struggling financially.
