Abuja - 6 January 2024: A legislative framework enabling Nigerian citizens to carry firearms for self-defense has been advocated by Senator Ned Nwoko, who represents the Delta North Senatorial District, in light of the ongoing attacks by terrorists and bandits throughout the country. Concerned about the ongoing killing of civilians, Nwoko announced that he had filed a bill to change the current regulations on civilian gun ownership. The goal of the bill is to give people the ability to defend themselves against criminal elements' unprovoked attacks.

The lawmaker expressed optimism that the bill would be approved when senators resumed their work on legislation after the break on Friday in Abuja. Nwoko underlined that despite government efforts, insecurity persists and people must be prepared to defend themselves.

Nwoko referred to the recent violent attacks in Plateau communities, which left over 200 people dead and numerous others injured, as a “disturbing moment” and emphasized the goal of the bill, which is to give civilians more power over criminals.

He said, “Considering these dire circumstances, there's a growing call for responsible firearm ownership as a means of self-defence.” Nwoko revealed the bill's urgency and importance by revealing that it had been laid and would be read for the first time when the senators reconvene after the new year's break.

“I am pleased that the topic has gained national significance, sparking diverse opinions and discussions that predominantly fall into two camps - one in opposition and the other in support,” Nwoko said. He made the argument that the current security measures had not proven effective in protecting communities and that granting law-abiding citizens the right to bear arms may give them a sense of security as well as a way to defend their families and themselves.

Nwoko emphasized the responsibility and stringent regulations that would accompany the move to permit civilians to bear firearms, including comprehensive training on their proper use.
