Supreme Court Affirms Election Of Babajide Sanwo-Olu As Governor Of Lagos State
Babajide Sanwo-Olu's election as Lagos State governor is upheld by the Supreme Court
Babajide Sanwo-Olu's election victory has been upheld by the Supreme Court, solidifying his election and appointment as Lagos State governor.
In line with earlier decisions made by the state's Court of Appeal and the election petition tribunal, the supreme court maintained the governor's election on Friday.
Judge Garba Lawal, who read the main ruling, denied Mr. Rhodes-Vivour's appeal.
According to him, the deputy governor was eligible to run for office.
Judges Yargata Nimpa, Samuel Bola, and Paul Bassey comprised the three-member panel that delivered the judgment. The Appeal Court upheld the tribunal's decision to re-elect Babajide Sanwo-Olu and Obafemi Hamzat as the Governor and Deputy Governor of Lagos State, respectively.
Gbadebo Rhodes-Vivour of the Labour Party had challenged the election of Sanwo-Olu.
The qualification of Sanwo-Olu's running mate is the main point of contention in the Labour Party candidate Gbadebo Rhodes-Vivour's election.
He asserted that Obafemi Hamzat, the deputy governor, had given up his Nigerian citizenship.
The deputy of Sanwo-Olu is a native of Nigeria, the court ruled.
The appellant failed to present any evidence to support its claim that the Nigerian president must register the renunciation of citizenship of a citizen by birth, the court stated.
As a result, the court rejected the Labour Party candidate's appeal due to its lack of merit.
Abdulazeez Adediran, popularly known as Jandor, of the PDP countered that Sanwo-Olu's name on his WAEC certificate was different from the one he submitted to INEC.
The supreme court labeled the appeal as “academic” when it dismissed it.
In 2023, Jandor finished second in the general election.
