Stop Asking Women To Travel To Abuja, Minister Tells NIS

Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo

The interior minister criticize NIS for forcing married women to visit their Abuja office in order to change their name

Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, the minister of interior, has criticized Nigerian Immigration Service (NIS) agents for persistently requesting individuals, particularly married women, to visit the Abuja headquarters in order to change their passport's name.

During a recent dinner in Abuja with members of the Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu ABAT Media Centre and a few social media influencers, the minister referred to the act as “stupid practice”

“I can't just figure out that you want to change just your name and you have to be in Abuja. I have asked the immigration people, is it that immigration people in Abuja have more than one head than those in the states?” He asked.

The Minister states that he wants more secure borders for the nation and that passport issues are still the least of his concerns. “You can update your data without having to travel to Abuja thanks to the new reforms. Everything will be accessible online.”

From March, once you have ever enrolled for passport and you are coming to renew, please don't come to my office, stay in your house and do it. We have contactless biometrics and this can be done in five minutes. We don't need to keep taking your biometrics every five years. Who does that in the world?

“This is what Renewed Hope is about. It is about positively disrupting the process. By the grace of God, the issue of passports is the least of our worries,” the minister stated.

Announcing plans for a forum to present the ministry's agenda for 2024, the minister repeatedly emphasized the importance of knowledge transfer and officer training regarding passport issues.
