Obasanjo Visits Iwuanyanwu In Owerri, Discusses ‘Issues Of Mutual Interest’
Obasanjo Meets Ohanaeze Leadership, Discusses 'Issues of Mutual Interest'
The former president Olusegun Obasanjo and the leadership of Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide had a discussion about “issues of mutual interest.”
Over the phone with reporters, Ohanaeze Secretary General Ambassador Okey Emuchay stated that yesterday's talks took place at Chief Emmanuel Iwuanyanwu's home in Owerri, Imo State, as President General of Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide.
Otunba Oyewole Fasawe accompanied the former president, but other Ohanaeze chieftains and Igbo leaders in attendance included Chief Tony Ukasanya, Amb. Kema Chikwe, former Aviation Minister, Bishop Sunday Onuoha, Nze Fidelis Ozichukwu, and Ambassador Emuchay.
Emuchay called the meeting “very symbolic and crucial,” but he withheld the specifics. He also stated that Ndigbo would soon appreciate the outcome of the productive discussions.
According to the Ohanaeze scribe, the PG informed Chief
Obasanjo felt that, in light of his sacrifices for the country's unity and progress as its military Head of State, elected president, and current statesman, he should be honored by Nigeria.
During his presidency, he emphasized Obasanjo's “participation in ending the civil war with the slogan of no victor no vanquished; repayment of (Nigeria's) huge external debts and recovery of the economy.”
According to reports, the Ohanaeze PG made hints to the former president that the Igbo people would eventually give him honors in appreciation for the sense of community he provided Ndigbo while serving as president.
“Remember that when Chief Obasanjo was president, he appointed several Igbo sons and daughters into his cabinet and other high-profile Positions. A sense of belonging was provided Igbo nation during that time,” Emuchay said.
Ohanaeze is now in a position to champion the Igbo cause without interference thanks to Iwuanyanwu's leadership, and he has continuously protected Igbo interests when they were threatened.
