The first gay prime minister of France names his former partner as minister of affairs

Gabriel Attal, the youngest prime minister of France, has named 38-year-old Stéphane Séjournė, his former partner, as the minister of foreign affairs.

Attal, 34, became the nation's prime minister on Thursday, January 11, 2024.

Sejourne is the leader of both Macron's Renaissance party and the European Parliament's Renew Europe group of liberal, pro-European MPs.

When Attal first joined Macron's administration in 2018, he became the first openly gay prime minister of France and disclosed their relationship to the public.

Although the two men never acknowledged their split in public, Attal stated he had no partner in his October declaration to the High Authority for Transparency in Public Life, which gathers declarations from high-ranking officials to document potential conflicts of interest.
