African leaders, according to President Bola Tinubu, can prevent military coups on their continent by placing a high priority on good governance.

Speaking at the 64th extraordinary session of the authority of heads of state and government at the state house in Abuja on Sunday, Tinubu, the chairman of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), made the declaration.

He implored with West African leaders to put the region's collective prosperity and sound governance first as a crucial defense against authoritarian takeovers and unlawful political transitions.

As stated by the president, “the delivery of good governance is not just a fundamental commitment; it is also an avenue to address our citizens' concerns, to improve their quality of life, and to create a stable environment conducive to the achievement of sustainable development,” according to Ajuri Ngelale, Tinubu's special adviser on media and publicity.

“By providing good governance that tackles the challenges of poverty, inequality and other concerns of the people, we would have succeeded in addressing some of the root causes of military interventions in civilian processes in our region.”

The head of ECOWAS added that the bloc's determination to preserve its commitment to democracy would not be diminished by the proposal to flot the “Sahel Alliance,” which would include Niger, Mali, and Burkina Faso.

The bloc has specified specific actions to be taken against any member state choosing an unconstitutional change of government, Tinubu continued.

“While the imposition of punitive sanctions may pose challenges, it is important to underscore that the struggle to protect the fundamental liberties of our Community's Citizens must be upheld and respected,” he said.

“Without let or hindrance, democracy will win, if we fight for it, and we will definitely fight for democracy.”

He urged military-ruled African nations to adopt “realistic and short transition plans” in order to restore democracy.

Also, Tinubu urged sister African nations to offer material and technical assistance to the nations affected by the coup.
