Osimhen breaks a 24-year curse to win CAF Player of the Year at the 2023 CAF Awards

Victor Osimhen, a forward for the Super Eagles and Napoli, has been named the 2023 CAF Footballer of the Year.

The goal machine defeated Morocco and PSG defender Achraf Hakimi as well as Mohamed Salah, the winner from Liverpool in 2017 and 2018.

Osimhen was chosen as the best football player on the continent in 2023 by head coaches/technical directors, captains of the senior national teams, and members of CAF's member associations.

Along with Joel Matip and Salah, the nine for Napoli was included in the FIFPro Africa Best XI for 2019. The award was accepted at a ceremony held in Egypt on Tuesday.

The 24-year-old had a great calendar year since he won the Scudetto with Napoli at the end of the 2022–2023 season, his first in 33 years.

Osimhen won the Golden Boot Award the same season and scored 26 goals in 32 games for the Philadelphia Eagles.

The last Nigerian to win the awards before Osimhen was Kanu Nwankwo in 1999.

Rasheed Yekini was the first Nigerian to win the coveted award, and Nigerian players have won it five times overall. Victor Ikepba was crowned the winner in 1997, but Emmanuel Amuneke took first place in 1994.
