The Chief of Army Staff issues an apology for the bombing in Kaduna that killed over 80 persons
The Chief of Army Staff, Lt. Gen. Taoreed Lagbaja, has apologised to the relatives of victims of the accidental bombing that occurred at the Tudun Biri community in Igabi Local Government Area of Kaduna State on Sunday. Lagbaja described the incident as “very disheartening.”
On Tuesday, Lieutenant General Taoreed Lagbaja, the Chief of Army Staff (COAS), expressed sadness for the fatal airstrike that killed 85 persons and injured many others in Kaduna State.
Visiting the scene of the accident that has cast the country into mourning, the army commander expressed the Nigerian Army's regret to the people, the government, and the community of Kaduna State.
Lagbaja promised to prevent such an incident from happening in the conduct of military operations when he paid the victims a visit two days following the unintentional strike in the North-West state's Igabi district.
“My assessment of that unfortunate incident of Sunday, December 3, 2023, is that it is grave. regrettable. We will do everything possible to prevent such an occurrence from happening again in the conduct of our operations going forward,” he said about one of the country's deadliest military bombing accidents.
The army chief met with the Dangaladima Zazau, the District Head of Rigasa, Architect Aminu Idris, other leaders, and community people. He was accompanied by important staff officers from army headquarters and the General Officer Commanding 1 Division.
“The Chief of Army Staff (COAS) Lieutenant General Taoreed Lagbaja has paid a condolence visit to Tudun Birni community in Igabi Local Government Area of Kaduna State,” the statement reads.
“The COAS in an emotion laden speech expressed regrets on the unfortunate mishap, describing it as a very disheartening occurrence.
“The COAS stated that he was in Tudun Birni to personally witness the site of the mishap and to convey sincere regrets and unreserved apologies on behalf of the Nigerian Army to the District Head and people of the community, as well as the Government and entire people of Kaduna State,” he said.
“He disclosed that he has ordered a thorough inquiry into the incident to ascertain and identify areas of deficiency that led to the inadvertent disaster, adding that the findings and overarching outcome of the investigation will guide the NA in meticulously and professionally seeking and applying lasting solutions to identified lapses and deficiencies in both the human and Artificial Intelligence variables that will forestall future recurrence.”
One of the deadliest military bombing incidents in Nigerian history claimed 85 lives when the Nigerian Army launched an airstrike on Tudun Biri hamlet in the Igabi Local Government Area of Kaduna State.
