Sex Toys May Contribute To Diabetes, According To Doctors

Scientists alert us to the possibility that adult toys can harm the neurological system, impair immunity, and induce diabetes

Researchers have warned that using sex toys can harm the nerve system and result in metabolic diseases like diabetes. The latest study claims that microplastic particles, which can originate from a variety of sources, can enter the bloodstream and induce metabolic diseases like diabetes.

Scientists have shown that sex toys significantly increase the quantity of hazardous plastic particles, or microplastics, in human systems.

A study found that these microplastic particles can harm many body systems, interfere with immune responses, and result in health problems including diabetes.

Plastic particles are most frequently linked to metabolic problems. Researchers from Appalachian State University and Duke University discovered in a recent study that phthalates, which can alter hormone levels, are present in sex toys. They found that the concentrations of these substances are higher than what US consumers are warned about.

The group looked at four different kinds of sex toys: external vibrators, twin vibrators, beads, and anal toys. The most particle-releasing anal was followed by external vibrators, twin vibrators, and beads.

Dr. Joana Sipe, the lead author of the study, said: “We assert that since the measured presence of phthalates in our small sample size exceeds the exposure limit for the same chemicals in the US Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) regulations in children's toys, investigations into whether or not the risk scenarios are also similar in sex toys are prudent for public health protection.”

The nature of sex toys raised safety concerns that were previously considered taboo, as noted by Dr. Sipe and her team in their risk analysis published in the journal. The report indicates that, “popular culture articles, sex to critics and sex shops have raised awareness of chemical hazards, and healthcare professionals have called for educating consumers about preventable physical injuries associated with poorly designed sex toys.”
