Israel-Hamas War: Nigerian Senate Requests Truce And Asks FG To Step In
The Senate of Nigeria on Tuesday, demanded an end to the Israel-Hamas conflict, which has resulted in thousands of deaths
The Senate called for Israel and Palestine to have their own states and encouraged the executive branch of government to step in and resolve the conflict. This came after a proposal that was co-sponsored by 28 people and supported by Senator Suleiman Kawu Sumaila (NNPP, Kano South) was adopted.
The motion's sponsor, Senator Adamu Aliero (PDP, Kebbi), claimed that the current war's horrific death toll and potential for World War III were reasons for urgency. According to a UN estimate cited by him, during the war that began in October when Hamas attacked Israeli territory, 18 houses of worship were destroyed, 22,600 residential units sustained damage, 19 medical facilities, 90 educational facilities, 70 industrial facilities, and 49 media offices were demolished.
He stated that although there has been a redoubled attempt to negotiate a peace agreement between Israel and the Palestinians, the discussions have not yielded the necessary outcomes. Barau Jibrin, the deputy Senate President, spoke about the measure and said: "What we need now is a ceasefire so that people who are being killed every day will no longer be killed. So many have lost their lives; so many children have been left orphaned. All you see on television about the conflict are dead bodies and so forth. This is not acceptable. All this is not good for the modern world.
"We should add our voices to those of responsible people all over the world that Palestine and Israel should come together and accept the two-state solution for permanent peace to prevail in that region of the world."
