Rivers State PDP Chairman, Akawor Tenders Resignation To National Leaders After Securing Appointment Under President Tinubu

Akawor, the chairman of the Rivers State PDP, tenders his resignation to national leaders after receiving an appointment under President Tinubu.

Desmond Akawor, the Peoples Democratic Party's (PDP) Rivers State chairman, has resigned from his post as the opposition party's state chairman. President Bola Tinubu named him to the cabinet.

Barely more than a few hours after President Tinubu named him as the Federal Commissioner representing Rivers State in the Revenue Mobilization, Allocation, and Fiscal Commission (RMAFC), Akawor submitted his resignation letter on Friday.

Remember that, subject to Senate confirmation, President Tinubu named Akawor as a Federal Commissioner representing Rivers State in the Revenue Mobilization, Allocation, and Fiscal Commission on Thursday.

The nomination of Akawor was announced in a statement signed by Ajuri Ngelale, the President's Special Advisor on Media and Publicity. The statement explained that Akawor's appointment followed “the tragic demise of the immediate past RMAFC Federal Commissioner from Rivers State, Asondu Temple earlier this month.”

Writing to PDP interim National Chairman Umaru Damagun on November 22, 2023, Akawor said that his resignation was related to his appointment and that he had since passed over to his deputy, Aaron Chukwuemeka.

President Tinubu urged Akawor to “deploy his robust experience across tiers of government toward the comprehensive reformation of processes that will ensure the most efficient and productive utilisation of allocations to all three tiers of government in Nigeria.”

“I have recently been nominated for a Federal appointment to the Revenue Mobilisation, Allocation, and Fiscal Commission as the Federal Commissioner representing Rivers State.

“After consultation with my leaders and family, I have accepted this opportunity to serve our country, which I consider a national service.

“Consequently, I have resigned my position as the Rivers State party chairman of our great party the PDP, and immediately handed over all duties to the Deputy Party Chairman, Aaron Chukwuemeka, who has commenced action in this stead.”
