Actor Michael Gambon, who played Dumbledore in the Harry Potter series, dies at age 82
Sir Michael Gambon, an Irish-English actor best remembered for portraying Professor Albus Dumbledore in six of the eight "Harry Potter" movies, has away at the age of 82 at a hospital.
In a statement released on Thursday, his family stated that he passed away following a fight with pneumonia.
In a decades-long acting career that spanned TV, film, radio, and theater, Gambon earned four British Academy of Film and Television Arts (BAFTAs) for television. His acclaimed role as the headmaster of the wizarding school Hogwarts in the Harry Potter series was the highlight of this career.
Ireland's capital city of Dublin is where he was born. In 1998, he received a knighthood for his contributions to the entertainment sector. In the ITV series Maigret, based on the JK Rowling books, Gambon also played French investigator Jules Maigret. In Dennis Potter's The Singing Detective on the BBC, he was also well-known for playing Philip Marlow.
