MOHBAD'S DEATH: Reps Take Action To Defend Mohbad's Royalties
Reps take action to defend Mohbad's royalties and music rights while observing a moment of silence
The late musician llerioluwa Aloba, commonly known as Mohbad, had his music rights protected by the Nigeria Copyright Commission (NCC), which has been called to a meeting by the House of Representatives.
Following Babajimi Benson's (APC, Lagos) motion of urgent public significance from the previous day, this resolution was introduced.
Mr. Benson, who moved the motion, claimed that young people in Nigeria are still interested in learning the reason for the superstar's demise.
He explained that in order to preserve the late music star's memory, the lawmakers must keep an eye on the current probe.
In 2022, Mohbad quit his record company, Marlian Records, which was run by Azeez Fashola (Naira Marley), alleging a number of issues, among them unpaid royalties. This problem is a symptom of a larger issue where artists have trouble defending their rights.
"Most of the proceeds of the late artist are still going to the Marlian Music Group, and there have been no moves from any agency to protect the Estate of the late singer who is currently the 46th best-selling digital artiste in the world," he said.
Mr. Benson continued by saying that immediate action is required to protect other musicians in Nigeria from rapacious record labels.
The Justice and Legislative Compliance Committees were instructed by the House to oversee compliance.
The proposal was put to a vote by Speaker Tajudeen Abbas, and it was approved by a unanimous vote. The House then held a minute of silence in memory of Mohbad.
Recall that Mohbad passed away on September 12, 2023, in a contentious manner, and was buried at Ikorodu the next day.
He died at the age of 27, and there are conflicting tales of how he passed away on social media.
Many criticized his family for burying the musician before an autopsy could be done, which led to controversy both online and offline in response to the unexpected burial.
