When it came time to hire a new manager in the summer, Chelsea was considering Nagelsmann.

However, the 35-year-old was eliminated from contention after Chelsea and Mauricio Pochettino recently reached a deal for the Argentine to become the club's next head coach for the 2018–19 campaign.

"I can confirm that Chelsea were quick to call [after Nagelsmann was sacked by Bayern Munich]. There were some phone conversations," Struth said to Bild podcast Phrasenmaher.

"It was the right decision (by Nagelsmann) not to go there. It is a club in troubled waters at the moment. And their transfer policy, spending a few hundred million euros, has raised expectations that need to be met.

"There were also some other issues. He was their number one choice; that was our information. I believe it would have happened if he had wanted it."
