DJ Maphorisa Was Detained For Allegedly Abusing Thuli Phongolo, His Girlfriend


DJ Maphorisa, an Amapiano producer and club DJ, was apprehended on Sunday afternoon for reportedly abusing his partner Thuli Phongolo. DJ Maphorisa is also known as Themba Sonnyboy Sekowe.


In a statement sworn at the Sandton police station by Phongolo, the occurrence of their assault was detailed.


At the former Generations: The Legacy actress' Sandton, Johannesburg, apartment, there is suspected evidence of gender-based assault.


"On Sunday 2023/5/7 at about 12pm, I was at my place of residence with my boyfriend, Themba Sonnyboy Sekowe, better known as DJ Maphorisa. I confronted him so that we can talk about our argument, which happened the previous night during his gig," said Phongolo in the statement.


Phongolo explained in the assertion:


"He became aggressive and started to punch me with his fists on my chest. She further told the police that he took her to the balcony after beating her inside the apartment.


"He held me and took me to the balcony, and grabbed me aggressively by my neck."


Phongolo continued, "While they were fighting for her phone, which he had taken from her, he kept hitting her with his elbow on the balcony."


According to the actress and DJ, after he gave her the phone, she called her manager, who brought her to the police station to file a domestic abuse report against him.
Phongolo reportedly had significant neck bruises, according to the cops who witnessed her going to the police station.


She said in her statement that she had injuries on her right cheek, neck, chest, and arms. Although it's unknown what started the fight, insiders claim that the couple has been experiencing major issues.


On Monday, Maphorisa is scheduled to appear in the Randburg Magistrates' Court.


On allegations of assault, Maphorisa is scheduled to appear in the Randburg Magistrates' Court on Monday.
