WHY CAN'T WE BAN 'LAGOS GANGS' - NFVCB
Given the controversy that have surrounded the film "Gangs of Lagos" since its premiere on Amazon Prime Video, the National Film and Video Censors Board, or NFVCB, has clarified why it cannot be banned.
Alhaji Adedayo Thomas, the regulatory body's Executive Director and CEO, stated that the board cannot take action against the film at this time.
According to him, the NFVCB lacks legislative authority to regulate what is displayed on the web site.
He noted that regulating internet platforms is difficult because it is not part of the Board's mandate.
"Have you seen the movie in any cinema house or being exhibited in any open space? Our job does not cover regulating online platforms.
"I don't know why people are referring to the Censors Board to take action. We have a bill before the National Assembly seeking to empower the Board to regulate online platforms and any other platforms where movies are exhibited.
"Online platform is difficult to regulate and it's not part of our mandate," Alhaji Thomas explained.
His explanation became essential after Lagos residents petitioned the Censors Board on behalf of the Isale Eko Descendants' Union (IDU) over claimed defamation of their community and Eyo masquerade in the film "Gangs of Lagos."
The Lagos State Government, on its part, characterized the film as a cultural misrepresentation and a disparaging portrayal of the state's culture.
According to the Commissioner for Tourism, Arts, and Culture, Mrs Uzamat Akinbile-Yussuf, the Ministry, as the regulating agency and protector of Lagos State's culture, saw the film as a mockery of Lagos' legacy.
'Gangs of Lagos,' co-produced by Kemi Lala Akindoju and Jade Osiberu, was released on the web platform Amazon Prime Video on April 7.
Tobi Bakare, Adesua Etomi-Wellington, Chike Osebuka, Chioma Chukwuka, Olarotimi Fakunle, Chioma Chukwuka, and Bimbo Ademoye were among those who appeared.
Among the other cast members of the blockbuster film are Lyabo Ojo, Zlatan, Debo "Mr Maraconi" Adedayo, Yhemolee, Pasuma, Toyin Abraham, Tayo Faniran, Damilola Ogunsi, and Funke Williams.
