NIGERIANS' EXPECTATIONS FOR THE 2023 PRESIDENTIAL ELECTION WERE NOT MET - US AMBASSADOR

 Mary Beth Leonard

The presidential election held on February 25 didn't live up to Nigerians' hopes, according to Mary Beth Leonard, the US ambassador there.

Leonard, in an op-ed, "The Elections of February 25," highlighted that many people are unhappy with the polling results.

She did, however, accept that some people are celebrating wins they feel they have worked hard for.

The Independent National Electoral Commission, or INEC, has now been urged by Leonard to swiftly resolve the issues in advance of the March 11 gubernatorial and House of Assembly elections.

"The people of Nigeria demonstrated their dedication to democracy on February 25, but there are many angry and frustrated Nigerians as well as many who are celebrating victories they believe were hard-fought and well-earned," part of the statement reads.

The All Progressives Congress, which is currently in power, announced Bola Tinubu as the winner.

But, Peter Obi of the Labour Party (LP) and Atiku Abubakar of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) are proceeding to court.

Leonard added: "In the coming days, it will be important for the future of this country that Nigerians not let their differences divide them, and that the legally established process for resolving challenges to the election be allowed to take its course."
