NIGERIA ELECTION: UTILIZE THE PROPER MECHANISMS TO APPEAL THE RESULTS - UN TO NIGERIANS
Use right channels to contest results, United Nations to aggrieved parties
The Nigerian presidential elections were held last Saturday, and the United Nations (UN) has urged political parties and candidates who are unhappy with the results to challenge them legally and constitutionally.
This was said by UN spokesman Stephane Dujarric in an interview with NAN.
According to Dujarric, Nigeria has a long history of peacefully changing governments.
"What is important is that as in any election, any... that if any candidate or group of candidates have an issue with the results that they go through the established legal and constitutional channels to work out their challenges.
"And it is very important for everyone to remain calm as that process or these processes play out," Dujarric.
Bola Tinubu, the All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate for president, was declared the winner of the 2023 presidential election by INEC on Wednesday.
The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and the Labour Party (LP) have so far rejected the results and requested that Yakubu Mahmood, the chairman of INEC, step down till new elections are held.
