THE FAINTEST PEN IS SHARPER THAN THE SHARPEST BRAIN
Setting a goal and creating a plan to achieve that goal is what will set you apart from others.
Our goals are very important, human beings will be roaming endless without goals - like a friend would say; "any where belle face" and a human being is not supposed to live like that because we are created to be purposeful so we need to set goals. Our goals are important because they help us calculate our success pace to achieve whatsoever we desire to achieve.
For me, I have a lot of items (devices/books) that I write with in terms of my goal. And other sections of life that I listed out eg spiritual, financial, social, emotional, etc. We should have something where we journal down things.
This is another year and it should not be lived like the previous years. It's only a fool that keeps doing a particular thing, expecting a different result.
2023 is not a time to be wasted. Planning and setting smart goals on how to achieve our plans is one of the ways we can not waste this year.
So, let's sit back and enjoy this composition on SMART Goals.
For this topic, I am going to be buttressing on the following points:
* Why your goals are important
* Items needed in goal setting
* Hindrances to goal accomplishments
* What to do when your goals are not been achieved
* Meaning of SMART Goals
Importance of Goal setting
• It helps one to be organized.
• It helps one to determine one's pace in the success ladder.
• It boosts one's self confidence.
• It reveals one's strength and weakness, thereby gaining self awareness.
• Lastly, it helps one achieve one's desires.
Items needed for Goal setting
A good quality book ( for me, I'm a person of colors, I use colorful notepad app, diary or a hidden thick cover journal) + Pens ( black, blue, red and pink). Pen of different colors helps to differentiate your plans into sections. + Sticky notes (one of my faves).
What to do when your goals are not been achieved
• Get accountable to someone: No man is an Island. We all need somebody when the chips are down. We all need a little encouragement and pep talk every now and then. Get a someone who will be on your case to help you rise. He/she can be a friend or a mentor.
• Be prayerful: Let God in on your plans. There will be days when difficulties will arise. There will be days when you will feel like throwing in the towel, but when you remember who's by your side, your zeal, confidence level will be fired up again.
• Mind your social circle: Who are the friends you surround yourself with? Are they goal setters too or do they just live life anywhere the wind blows? Socialize with like minded people and they will help you as you in turn help them achieve their goals. Iron sharpens iron.
Meaning of Goals
Goals are lists of objectives in form of ambitions, desires or efforts an individual wants to attain. For example, a career goal.
To me, I believe our lives are divided into different sections, and those sections have different desires or objectives we would like to achieve so as to make our lives meaningful.
Areas such as our physical, spiritual, socio- emotional, mental, career and financial life needs to be well planned out in order for us to live a purposeful live.
For one to have a SMART Goal, these different areas of your life must have things you would like to achieve in them.
SMART is an acronym for;
Hindrances to goal Accomplishment
° Fear
° Financial constraints
° Laziness and procrastination (deadly combo! Trust me😜, I know)
° Low self esteem
Laziness and procrastination are big issue because they will be a time you would feel like giving up, and keep making excuses before you realize what's going on, laziness and procrastination has eaten deep into you.
Still on point of needing people, we really need to mind our social circle. Who are your friends? Because the people you call friends - their lifestyle can easily influence you, maybe you might be saying I don't easily get influenced by people, which is not true because they are some traits and habit you will easily pick from them - the person's way of living and doing things is already changing you. That's one.
Other pointer; we really need to be prayerful. Prayer cannot be overemphasized, reason why we must put God first in everything.
SMART the above are the characteristics every of your goal must bear. You just don't say, you need a change of job/career change, want to get married, a car or desire anything without your goals having those characteristics attached to it.
You goals should be divided into three, long term goals, mid-term goal, and short term goals.
√ Your long term goals should be something you want to achieve 2 to 3, 5 or 10 years. I have 20 years long-term goals that I set in 2017 and its still running, I review it every year and check the ones that I've been able to achieve and the ones I've not been able to achieve.
√ Midterm goals are objectives that may take longer to achieve than short-term objectives, but they often have a shorter timeline than that of a long-term goal.
√ Short-term goals often take less than a year to complete, while you might work on a long-term goal for over a decade.
Ensure you note down your goals - The faintest pen is sharper than the sharpest brain. Goals settings entail a lot of things especially your core values - Your core values are like foundations, they will serve as basis to your decision making.
Human being is not supposed to be fixated at a particular thing, we are supposed to be flexible to change cause change is constant.
Time management is of essence because you can't juggle various items at the same pace and you insist of doing it, you might end up losing all your balls. If you can't juggle all the balls at the same time, map out the balls that are of utmost priority and go with those ones because as a human being you are still limited.
However, any goals that will negatively affect someone else's life is not a goal worth achieving. You must look at the goals and ascertain if it will benefit you and others at long run, it must first benefit you at the immediate term before it benefit others at long run.
One of the sole aim of setting goals is for you to be purposeful. Nothing is obtainable without goal setting.
