KATHY HOCHUL BECOMES NEW YORK'S FIRST ELECTED WOMAN GOVERNOR

Kathy Hochul

The 64-year-old Kathy Hochul is the first woman to be elected governor of New York.

"I'm not here to make history, I'm here to make a difference", Hochul told supporters after her triumph.

she tweeted on Wednesday. "I may be New York's first woman governor, but I know I won't be the last."

The Democrat continues to hold the position she took up in August 2021 after Andrew Cuomo announced his resignation.

Republican congressman Lee Zeldin, a Trump friend and opponent of Hochul, lost to Hochul.

Hochul defeated Long Island's U.S. Rep. Tom Suozzi and Public Advocate Jumaane Williams to win the Democratic primary in June.

Following Chris Lee's resignation, Hochul won a special election for the 26th congressional district of New York in May 2011.

She became the district's first Democrat to hold office in 40 years after the triumph.
