HUSHPUPPI'S SENTENCING HAS BEEN POSTPONED YET AGAIN BY A U.S COURT.
The sentencing of embattled internet fraudster Ramon Abbas aka Hushpuppi has been postponed yet again by the United States District Court for the Central District of California.
The 39-year-old was scheduled to be sentenced on Monday, September 19, but the court postponed it until November 3, 2022, after he received unexpected relief in the ongoing trial.
According to media, the delay comes after several days of futile appeals by his lawyers.
Judge Otis D. Wright in Los Angeles, according to the report, said Mr Abbas will now be sentenced on the new date based on the court's own motion.
Prosecutors had argued against delaying the sentencing beyond September 19, claiming that Mr Abbas and his lawyers had prior knowledge of all relevant matters in the case and were only out to delay and frustrate the judicial process.
However, Mr Abbas' lawyers, led by criminal defense attorney Louis Shapiro, claimed that prosecutors were attempting to rush the judge into sentencing their client despite the fact that some issues remained unresolved.
The lawyers also accused the Central California prosecution of lacking human compassion and using deceptive tactics to make their case for at least 11 years in prison for their client.
Mr Wright had rejected Mr Abbas' request for a continuance last Thursday, agreeing with the prosecutors that final sentencing would take place today at 1:30 p.m. However, with less than an hour until the scheduled sentencing, the judge ordered a postponement to November 3, the date requested by Mr Abbas' lawyers.
Hushpuppi was arrested in the United Arab Emirate (UAE) of Dubai in June 2020 and flown to the United States, where he pleaded guilty to the charges in July 2021 and was ordered to remain in custody pending sentencing.
Judge Wright moved the sentence hearing from February 14 to July 11 and then to September 19 at the request of counsel.
