A family is seeking justice after soldiers allegedly killed their daughter while pursuing a car carrying illegal goods in Rivers State.

Damietta Green, 25, died after being hit by a bullet believed to have been fired by a soldier in Port Harcourt, Rivers State.

According to reports, the unfortunate incident occurred on Tuesday, September 6, along Harbour Road in Port Harcourt. According to reports, soldiers on guard duty at the Nigeria Correctional Centre (Prison) usually set up roadblocks around the area to extort money from transporters of illegal refined petroleum product (kpofire). According to multiple sources, the craziness began when a Toyota Camry suspected of transporting the illegal product refused to stop.

The soldier chased after the car and jumped on the hood. He began sheeting indiscriminately when the car refused to stop. According to a source, "there were many vehicles trapped in the gridlock caused by the checkpoint, and the victim was in one of those vehicles, a Lexus 330 salon car." The errant driver of the Toyota Camry escaped unharmed, but the vehicle was towed to the nearby Central Police Station.

Other passengers in the car told media at UPTH that they were on their way home from a sales meeting when the Lexus driver offered them a ride. "We know him (the driver) from Town (a city suburb), and he offered us a ride home. When the shooting began, we were at the checkpoint "According to one of the victim's friends. The story was confirmed by Emmanuel Oluwaseun, who offered the lady a ride. He claimed the byllets entered the car through the back passenger door and lodged in the back of the victim, who was sitting in the back with another passenger.

"In the confusion, she was shouting that she had been shet, but we couldn't do anything because the soldier was just she@ting. When the chaos eased, we rushed her to the Central Police Station. The medical personnel said the matter was beyond them. They referred us to BMH (Braithwaite Memorial Hospital) where she was given some treatment and referred to UPTH where she died." he said.
