EPL INTERVENTION: VAR CONTROVERSIAL CHELSEA VS. WEST HAM AND NEWCASTLE VS CRYSTAL PALACE GAMES TO BE REVIEWED
Premier League has requested that PGMOL review controversial VAR decisions in the games of Chelsea vs. West Ham and Newcastle vs. Crystal Palace
Goals were ruled out in both matches, sparking heated debate among players, managers, pundits, and fans.
Some of the criticism stems from the use of VAR to overturn previously made debatable calls, as seen in the two incidents that will be investigated.
Maxwel Cornet of West Ham thought he had scored a late equalizer at Stamford Bridge. However, after a review by referee Andy Madley, the goal was disallowed due to a challenge by Jarrod Bowen on Chelsea goalkeeper Edouard Mendy in the build-up.
Newcastle were awarded a goal after defender Tyrick Mitchell bundled a cross over his own line. However, VAR official Lee Mason overturned the decision because Magpies midfielder Joe Willock collided with Crystal Palace goalkeeper Vicente Guaita in an incident believed to have gone unnoticed by on-field referee Michael Salisbury.
It is unclear what the implications of this urgent review will be, and whether the use of VAR in future top-flight matches in England will change.
