WE'VE MET 80% OF ASUU'S DEMANDS - FG

The Federal Government says it has met almost 80 percent of the demands by the Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU.

It disclosed this while describing the decision of ASUU to extend the six-month-old strike as unreasonable.

Recall that the academic union had extended the lingering strike indefinitely on Monday, August 29, 2022. Reacting, the Director of Press and Public Relations, in the Federal Ministry of Education, Bem Goong, stressed that the Federal Government had deployed all measures to end the strike.

"If you make some requests, and roughly 80% of them have been met, there is no reason to prolong the strike any further," he remarked. Given that the majority of the demands have been met, it is unreasonable for the strike to continue.

As for the following stages, the government has already established a committee to coordinate the University Peculiar Personnel and Payroll System (IPPS), University Transparency and Accountability Solution (UTAS), and Integrated Payroll and Personnel Information System (IPPIS). Since February 2022, ASUU has been on strike since the government has failed to uphold a 2009 deal.

On the other hand, some institutions like the college of education (COEA) Abia state will be resuming after their internal strike that have lasted five months. A communique forwarded to the student union read that the school will be resuming lectures next week Tuesday after a thorough meeting amongst the school management was successful.

Clamours are still everywhere as regarding the six months ASUU strike. Students are no longer finding the situation funny. Some have taken to their social media handles, where they have lambasted the Federal Government for their insensitivity towards the education of her youths and their gross ineptitude at handling the age long commitment with ASUU. Some also criticized ASUU, calling them rogue and misfits and blaming them for not accepting the FG's offer to end the strike.

As at the time of this article, there seems to be no end in sight to this strike. Nothing of importance seems to be going on. All stakeholders are currently in animation.
