Ben Shelton edges Tommy Paul, Tiafoe seals ATP finals berth...
World No. 4 Ben Shelton battled past fellow American Tommy Paul in a gruelling three-set contest on Friday to secure his place in the Paris Masters semi-finals.
The quarter-final was decided by a single break in each set, with Shelton holding his nerve to close out a hard-fought 6-4, 4-6, 6-3 victory.
The 24-year-old has now made American history in Paris, becoming the first player from the United States to reach the semi-finals of the Masters 1000 event since John Isner and eventual champion Jack Sock achieved the feat in 2017.
It was a painful defeat for world No. 14 Paul on two fronts. Not only did it end his pursuit of a first Masters title, it also shattered his hopes of booking a place at this season's ATP Finals.
That result has a direct knock-on effect for Frances Tiafoe. Despite crashing out in the second round on Wednesday, the American is now assured of a spot at the season-ending showpiece in Turin, which runs from November 15 to 22.
Paul was the first to blink on court, faltering while serving to stay in the set at 4-5. Two costly double faults handed Shelton a pair of set points, and the Atlanta native seized the second with a thumping forehand winner.
Paul responded immediately, though, breaking Shelton to love in the opening game of the second set to signal he was far from done.

With his nose in front, the 29-year-old held his nerve to force the match into a deciding set.
The momentum swung back Shelton's way in the fourth game of the decider, when the third seed converted a break point with a stunning inside-out forehand that clipped the very outside of the line.
From there, Shelton never let Paul back into the contest, closing out the win to set up a semi-final showdown with Luca Van Assche. The Frenchman had earlier ended Australian qualifier Rinky Hijikata's remarkable run to the last eight.
The action continues later on Friday, when seven-time Grand Slam champion Carlos Alcaraz takes on Taylor Fritz with a semi-final berth on the line.
And to round off the day's play, former world No. 2 Casper Ruud will face Portuguese lucky loser Nuno Borges.
