NHL Roundup: Avalanche Score Five Straight to Stun Penguins, Bruins Rally Past Ducks

Avalanche Vs Penguins
Avalanche rally from 2-0 down to beat Penguins

It was a night of comebacks in the NHL, as the Colorado Avalanche erased an early 2-0 deficit with five straight goals to sink the Penguins, while the red-hot Bruins stormed back in the third period to spoil Anaheim's night at home.

The high-powered Colorado Avalanche were on full display Friday, erupting for five straight goals to rally past the Pittsburgh Penguins.

Avalanche Erupt for Five Straight to Sink Penguins

The Colorado Avalanche (5-2-1) captured the Presidents' Trophy last season and came into 2026-27 expected to contend for it again, and on Friday against the Pittsburgh Penguins (3-4-1) they showed why. Even after falling into an early 2-0 hole, Colorado found another gear behind its big three, with Nathan MacKinnon leading the charge with a goal and four points.

Martin Necas and Cale Makar added five assists combined, and Mackenzie Blackwood locked it down with 29 saves on 31 shots, as it was all Avalanche after the opening 10 minutes. For Pittsburgh, Evgeni Malkin and Bryan Rust provided the early spark, but on the road the Penguins had no answer once Colorado got rolling, dropping to 3-4-1 with the loss.

Bruins Rally Late to Down Ducks 4-2

The other matchup of the night featured the red-hot Boston Bruins (6-2-0) visiting the up-and-coming Anaheim Ducks (4-3-0), who have surprisingly struggled on home ice with a 1-3-0 record to start the year. That trend continued, even after Anaheim carried a 2-1 lead into the third, as Boston's offense came alive with goals from David Pastrnak, Elias Lindholm and Matthew Poitras to seal it.

In net, Bruins backup Michael DiPietro stopped 25 of 27 shots, and after a shaky first period, Boston cruised behind a dominant final frame. The Ducks got more encouraging signs from their young core, with Cutter Gauthier picking up an assist and Beckett Sennecke finding the back of the net, but it was another winnable home game that slipped away.
