NHL Results Recap: Canadiens, Red Wings, Blues Shine in 8-Game Thursday [WATCH]
| Mammoth Vs Penguins |
Young stars shine on NHL Thursday - Smith, Schaefer, Caufield and Thompson lead the way in a night of comebacks and barn-burners.
Thursday NHL roundup, 48 goals, two hat-tricks and two overtime thrillers...
Utah Mammoth let a late lead slip against the Pittsburgh Penguins before sealing an overtime thriller, while two Eastern heavyweights held off late comebacks to secure big wins.
Lightning Hold Off Jets Comeback to Stay Perfect at Home
The Tampa Bay Lightning (8-3-1) might be the NHL's most overlooked team despite another red-hot start to 2026/27, but Thursday's home game against the Winnipeg Jets (4-6-3) was far from comfortable. After storming to a 5-1 lead by the end of the second period, Tampa Bay saw Winnipeg mount a fierce road fightback, with Kyle Connor's first goal of the night with three minutes left keeping the comeback hopes alive.
The Lightning then locked it down, as Anthony Cirelli and Brandon Hagel each posted three-point nights before an empty-netter sealed the win, keeping Tampa Bay unbeaten at home this season at 6-0-0.

Cooley's Last-Second Hat-Trick Sparks Mammoth OT Win
The Utah Mammoth (9-5-0) boast proven veterans but also one of the NHL's most exciting young cores, and on Thursday they showed just how dangerous that group can be. It was far from straightforward, as Ben Kindel put the Pittsburgh Penguins (5-6-2) ahead with 25 seconds remaining, only for Logan Cooley to tie it with one second left on the clock to complete his hat-trick.
Mikhail Sergachev then played hero in overtime, burying a feed from Barrett Hayton to seal the win for Utah in one of the wildest games of the young 2026/27 season.

Hurricanes Hold On to Edge Blue Jackets
The Carolina Hurricanes (11-2-2) have picked up right where they left off in 2026/27, grinding out wins even when they are not blowing teams away, just as they did Thursday night against the Columbus Blue Jackets (5-6-0). Mark Jankowski made it 3-0 just 16 seconds into the third period, but Columbus pushed back hard, with Kent Johnson cutting the deficit to one midway through the final frame.
The Blue Jackets could not complete the comeback, as Pyotr Kochetkov stopped 24 of 26 shots to secure the win for the defending Stanley Cup champions, who improve to 4-1-1 in six home games this season.

Arvidsson Hat-Trick Powers Red Wings Past Blackhawks
The Detroit Red Wings (6-4-3) have been a pleasant surprise early in 2026/27, sitting on 15 points through 13 games despite many tipping them for last place in the Eastern Conference. On Thursday they faced the rebuilding Chicago Blackhawks (4-9-0), and while Connor Bedard netted his fourth goal of the season, that was about the only positive for the Original Six side.
The Red Wings responded with four unanswered goals after that early strike, with Viktor Arvidsson capping his first hat-trick of the season with an empty-netter to hand Chicago a winless 0-5-0 start on the road.

Blues Dominate Bruins Behind Balanced Attack
The St. Louis Blues (6-6-1) have lacked consistency early in 2026/27, but at their best they look like one of the top teams in the Western Conference. Against the Boston Bruins (9-4-1) they were at that level, rolling past an Eastern contender with four different goal scorers and a three-point night from Philip Broberg in a comfortable win.
It was not all negative for Boston, as former top pick James Hagens scored his fifth of the season, but Joel Hofer turned aside 31 other shots, as the Blues proved simply too dominant on the night.

Canadiens Overpower Stars as Young Core Shines
The Montreal Canadiens (8-3-2) have big ambitions this season, and the young core built over the past five years is now paying off, with the team looking like a legitimate Stanley Cup contender. They faced another contender Thursday in the Dallas Stars (7-5-1), but Montreal seized control by the end of the first period and never let go.
Alex Newhook and two goals from Cole Caufield gave Montreal the early lead, and when Newhook struck again to make it 4-1, the result was all but decided, with rising star Wyatt Johnston's goal and assist the lone bright spot for Dallas.

Schaefer Stars as Islanders Edge Wild in Overtime
The New York Islanders (7-4-2) have hit their stride lately, earning another key win Thursday behind two goals and three points from star defenseman Matthew Schaefer. It was not straightforward against the Minnesota Wild (9-3-3), who tied the game on Matt Boldy's goal with four minutes left, before the Islanders delivered the decisive play in overtime.
After a standout rookie campaign, it was no surprise to see Schaefer provide the winner, lifting the Islanders to 3-3-1 on the road as they continue pushing for a playoff spot in the Metropolitan Division.

Capitals Outlast Predators in Road Thriller
When the Washington Capitals (8-4-0) get hot, few teams in the NHL can match their firepower, and they showed it again Thursday against the Nashville Predators (4-4-5). Ross Colton tied the game six minutes into the third, but the resilient Capitals responded, with Alex Tuch's first goal of the night proving to be enough to get them over the line.
Cole Hutson and Filip Forsberg both scored twice in one of the night's best matchups around the league, but Charlie Lindgren did just enough in net as Washington held on for a key road win to move to 2-2-0 away from home this season.

Young Sharks Edge Canucks Behind Smith Brace
The 2026/27 season is a chance for the San Jose Sharks (7-6-1) to take a real leap forward, and despite some growing pains, they ground out a big win over the Vancouver Canucks (3-11-1) on Thursday night. As expected, their young stars led the way, with Will Smith scoring two of the three goals while Yaroslav Askarov did enough in net, stopping 23 of 25 shots.
It was another tough loss for the rebuilding Canucks, as Liam Ohgren and Drew O'Connor both found the back of the net while Elias Pettersson continued his hot bounce-back campaign.

Byfield Saves Kings After Senators' Stunning Rally
The Los Angeles Kings (4-6-2) led the Ottawa Senators (8-5-1) 5-1 early, but the road team stormed back to force overtime behind two goals and an assist from Dylan Cozens, carrying all the momentum into the extra frame.
Undeterred, young star Quentin Byfield, off to another slow start in 2026/27, stepped up when it mattered most, firing one past Samuel Ersson to erase what would have been a devastating collapse and secure a much-needed win for the Kings.

Thompson Hat-Trick Fuels Sabres in 7-6 Thriller Over Ducks
The Buffalo Sabres (6-4-3) have been slow to find their form after a breakout 2025/26 season, but they are starting to build momentum. That continued Thursday in Anaheim, where they outlasted the Ducks (5-7-1) in a chaotic road barn-burner. The night belonged to Tage Thompson, who rattled off three straight goals, and with two more early in the third period, Buffalo surged to what looked like a commanding 7-3 lead.
Anaheim refused to fold. Sparked by tallies from Cutter Gauthier, Tristan Luneau and Beckett Sennecke, the Ducks ripped off three unanswered goals to cut the deficit to just one and put the Sabres under serious pressure late. The rally ultimately ran out of time, leaving both teams with lessons from a wild one - but it was Buffalo that held on to take the two points.
