Harri Heliovaara and Henry Patten are still in the hunt for a maiden US Open men’s doubles title after easing past Matteo Arnaldi and Jan-Lennard Struff 7-5, 6-2 in round two.
The No.1 seeds had a comfortable first-round win over the Cerundolo brothers, but this one was tougher early. After missing a break point in game two, both teams held serve until Heliovaara and Patten edged ahead 6-5 in the opener.
The breakthrough came in the 12th game. The Wimbledon champions surged to 40-0 and converted their second set point to take the opener 7-5.
In the second set, the top seeds fended off Arnaldi and Struff in game three, then struck immediately after to break and move 3-1 ahead.
Serving to stay in it at 2-5 down, Arnaldi and Struff couldn’t halt the top seeds again. Heliovaara and Patten took their first match point to close out the second set 6-2 and seal a straight-sets win.
Next up, the No.1 seeds will meet the winners of Nathaniel Lammons/Jackson Withrow vs Francisco Cabral/JJ Tracy.
