Nmecha Brace Seals Win As Dortmund Make Best Start Since 2015/16

Borussia Dortmund kicked off a Bundesliga season with four straight wins for the first time since 2015/16 after beating Paderborn 3-0 at Signal Iduna Park. The result also stretched Dortmund’s unbeaten run against Paderborn to eight matches.

Paderborn had the better of the early possession and looked to catch a Dortmund side still recovering from their Champions League clash with Villarreal on Tuesday. Yet they were behind inside five minutes.  

Caught high up the pitch, Paderborn were punished for giving the ball away. Serhou Guirassy played in Fabio Silva for the second game running in the Bundesliga.  

Guirassy slipped a through ball this time, and Silva burst clear, rounded the keeper and finished. That goal also snapped a streak of 10 straight Dortmund goals coming after half-time.  

Dortmund almost made it 2-0 when Joey Veerman’s volley took a big deflection and forced a sharp save from Nahuel Noll.  

Paderborn should have leveled moments later. Laurin Curda met Raphael Obermair’s cross but could only hit the side-netting from a good spot. Their wait for a first Bundesliga goal since promotion goes on. Dortmund did put the ball in twice more before the break, but Guirassy had a chip and a header both ruled out for offside.  

Paderborn still lacked a cutting edge after the break, and it took another big save from Noll to keep out Ethan Nwaneri and keep it at 1-0. Jobe Bellingham also went close for Dortmund with a header that missed, and nerves began to show among the Yellow Wall as the hosts struggled to kill the game off.  

  

A moment of class settled it. Nmecha linked up with Beier, beat a couple of Paderborn challenges and finished into the far corner to double Dortmund’s lead.

Dortmund were far from convincing, and even saw Marcel Sabitzer hit the bar late on. But they put some shine on the scoreline when Nmecha produced a stunning overhead kick in the 89th minute to seal a fifth straight win.  

Paderborn can feel they competed well, but they remain without a goal or a win in the Bundesliga this season. The loss also extends their club-record winless run in the top flight to 18 matches.
