New China badminton chief pledges corruption crackdown after predecessor probed.

China’s new badminton chief pledged on Sept 8 to stamp out corruption, after the person he replaced was placed under investigation and has not been seen in public for months.

Zhang Jun, a two-time Olympic gold medallist and former president of the Chinese Badminton Association, was accused in April of “serious violations of discipline and law.”

The phrase is commonly used in China to refer to corruption.

On Sept 8, the CBA announced Zhang Xin, an official from China’s General Administration of Sport, as its new president.

After being appointed, Zhang said the CBA will “resolutely see through the fight against corruption, drawing lessons from previous cases.”

He warned that officials should “not dare to be corrupt, not be corrupt and not want to be corrupt.”

Under Chinese President Xi Jinping, there has been a sweeping crackdown on officials, with sport now also in focus.

CBA vice-president Xia Xuanze was removed from his position on 8 September, the same day Zhang Xin took over.

Xia, an Olympic bronze medallist in 2000, was placed under investigation in August over suspected “serious violations of the law.”

China remains a badminton superpower and has been the most successful nation in the sport at the Olympics.
