Down 20-3 entering the fourth, No. 4 Texas scored 21 unanswered to stun No. 1 Ohio State 24-23 in the biggest win of the season so far.


Texas stuns No. 1 Ohio State with wild 4th quarter comeback...

 
The No. 4 Texas Longhorns pulled off a 24-23 upset over No. 1 Ohio State, completing a wild fourth-quarter comeback to seal it.


With 25 seconds remaining, running back Hollywood Smothers leapt over the pile at the goal line for the touchdown, giving Texas its first and only lead of the game.


That was all Texas needed to pull off the biggest win of the season so far.


It also marks the Longhorns’ largest fourth-quarter comeback since 2007.




Recap: Ohio State Controls Early

Ohio State dominated the first half from the jump. On the very first play, they forced Raleek Brown to fumble and turned it into points, settling for a field goal even after starting at the Texas 18-yard line.


Texas got the ball back, but couldn’t capitalize. Arch Manning aired one out deep to Cam Coleman, only for it to pop loose and land in Jaylen McClain’s arms. That pick gave Ohio State the ball back at their own 19.




Ohio State turned it into points right after. Ja'Kobi Jackson finished an 81-yard drive with an 8-yard rushing touchdown to push the lead to 10-3.


Texas struggled with drops, and Ohio State added another field goal. Then, just before halftime, Jeremiah Smith found the end zone to make it 20-3 and it looked like the Buckeyes were pulling away.




Ryan Day called it beforehand, this was going to be a fourth-quarter game. And that’s exactly what it turned into.


The third quarter was mostly a stalemate. Connor Hawkins knocked in his third field goal of the night for Ohio State, and both teams traded two punts apiece. Leading 23-3 heading into the fourth, Texas finally broke through.


Arch Manning capped a 15-play, 91-yard drive with a short touchdown pass to Ryan Wingo, cutting the deficit to 23-10.


Texas forced a three-and-out on the next Ohio State possession, then marched right back down the field to make it 23-17.


This time it was Hollywood Smothers who punched it in, finishing off a 72-yard drive to get the Longhorns within one score with 7:14 to play.




Ohio State drove 7 plays down the field, but Connor Hawkins missed what would have been the game-sealing field goal. That miss gave Texas one final shot to take the lead.


And the Longhorns made it count.


Capping a 72-yard drive with under 40 seconds left, Texas punched it in from the goal line to go up 24-23.


Manning finished 23-for-37 for 196 yards with 1 touchdown and 1 interception. Smothers and Ohio State’s Bo Jackson both ran for 74 yards, but Smothers had the final word with 2 touchdowns in the win.


Ohio State star Jeremiah Smith led all receivers with 8 catches for 164 yards and a touchdown.
