Infantino Announces 2027 FIFA Re-Election Bid Amid Growing Opposition

FIFA president Gianni Infantino has said he will stand for re-election in 2027, even amid recent criticism and falling support.
Infantino, who has come under scrutiny, is in Poland for the FIFA Women’s Under-20 World Cup. He was asked about running again before kick-off but declined to comment.
After the match, FIFA told Sky Sports that Infantino plans to run for president again in the April 2027 election.
“The FIFA president announced in April that he will stand for re-election in 2027. Of course, nothing has changed. Mr Infantino will be standing for re-election.”
For now, Infantino is set to run unopposed, but UEFA, AFC and CONCACAF are expected to put forward challengers before November’s cutoff. Potential names being floated include CONCACAF President Victor Montagliani, Legia Warsaw owner Dariusz Mioduski, AFC President Salman bin Ibrahim Al Khalifa, and FIFA Secretary General Mattias Grafstrom.
The deadline for candidates to submit nominations with backing from at least five member associations is November 18th, 2026 at 23:59 CET.
The European, Asian, and North and Central American confederations said they were withdrawing their backing for Infantino in the wake of the FIFA Forward Enterprise scandal.
The Dutch FA (KNVB) also said it will hold a global summit on FIFA’s future and has invited all 211 member associations, but not President Gianni Infantino.

“The KNVB no longer has confidence in the leadership of FIFA President Gianni Infantino. We believe FIFA needs new leadership from 2027 onwards,” it said in a statement. “But a new President alone is not enough. The way FIFA is governed must change as well. The KNVB supported Infantino in the most recent presidential election. That support was never unconditional.”
Infantino first took charge of FIFA in 2016 after succeeding the disgraced Sepp Blatter. He will now seek another term at the 77th FIFA Congress in April 2027, set to take place in Rabat, Morocco.
