Salzburg Edge Mjallby In Tight Europa Play-Off Opener
Mjallby came into this tie full of confidence after snapping their long winless league streak with a win over previously unbeaten title contenders Sirius. But facing a Red Bull Salzburg team with serious European experience was always going to be a huge step up for the Swedish debutants.
Baidoo tested Wallinder with an early shot after just five minutes, and it was a sign of things to come as Salzburg controlled the first half. Vertessen forced another routine save from the keeper, before Wallinder had to dive low to keep out Redzic’s effort after he cut inside from the right.
Dominik Schmid quickly became Salzburg’s main attacking threat. He picked up a cutback inside the box and fired a low shot that Wallinder managed to block with his legs. Barely a minute later, a half-cleared cross fell to Schmid on the edge of the area, and he struck it first time - only for Wallinder to palm it away again.
Toward the end of the half, Redzic did well to bring down a long ball and burst past his marker, but he couldn’t find a way past Wallinder from a tight angle. The rebound dropped to Mazurek, but his shot was blocked, so Mjallby went into the break still level at 0-0.
Three minutes into the second half, Max Nielsen had a golden chance to put MAIF ahead after the ball dropped to him, but he rushed it and blasted over. That let-off was followed by quick misses from Jeppe Kjaer and Olle Lindberg, as Mjallby came out of the break with more energy and intent.
Salzburg looked to regain control when Schmid swung in a corner and Mazurek got his head to it, only for it to be cleared off the line. Mjallby responded almost immediately on the hour mark, Aki Samuelsson delivered a corner that Pettersson powered toward goal, but it crashed against the crossbar instead.
Chances dried up for both teams as the half went on, until Kjaer floated in a perfect free-kick. Pettersson met it with a header across goal, and Tony Miettinen stretched to reach it at the far post, but he couldn’t angle his header inside the post.
Mjallby’s backline had been throwing themselves in front of everything to keep it level, but their resilience finally cracked in stoppage time. Kamir Konate drove to the byline on the left and cut the ball across, and under pressure from Sota Kitano, a scrambling Pettersson turned it into his own net.
Karl Marius Axelsen’s side barely had time to mount a response, and now both teams head to Austria for the return on Thursday, August 27th.
Salzburg will book a spot in the Europa League Phase with anything other than a loss, while Mjallby as it stands are set to drop into the Conference League League Phase.
