Teenager Rafael Jodar and American Brandon Nakashima both reached their first Masters 1000 semi-finals at the Canadian Open on Tuesday. Nakashima beat Italy’s Luciano Darderi 6-2, 6-3, while 19-year-old Spaniard Jodar got past France’s Arthur Fils 7-6, 6-3.
Jodar continued his breakthrough debut year on tour with a calm, assured victory over Fils.
Jodar grabbed an early break, but Fils hit back. Rain then interrupted play again with the Frenchman serving to stay in the set.
After the restart, Jodar took the first set in a tiebreak and rode that momentum into the second. He broke three more times to close it out 7-6, 6-3 – a result that will push him up to at least world No. 11.
The win marked the 34th of the Spaniard’s remarkable breakthrough season.
Nakashima fired 11 aces and marked his career-first Masters 1000 semi-final in Montreal with a muted celebration.

The 28th seed broke in the fourth game, then broke Darderi to love to wrap up the opener. The Italian grew increasingly frustrated as his composure slipped away.
Darderi dug in during the second set, but he couldn’t hold off Nakashima forever. The American finally broke through on his fourth attempt in the penultimate game.
Nakashima had the 19th seed chasing in the final game, forcing a net error on match point. After the handshake, he pumped his fists to mark the biggest win of his career.
