Tigers lose Riley Greene to hamstring tightness, not HBP bruise. Greene removed from Tigers game after being hit by pitch.
Iron man Riley Greene leaves game after 116 of 118 appearances this season...
Detroit Tigers All-Star Riley Greene was pulled from Tuesday’s game against the Cleveland Guardians after being hit by a pitch in the second inning.
What first looked minor could turn out to be more serious.
It happened in his only plate appearance of the night when Guardians reliever Tanner Bibee delivered a 3-2 fastball that struck Greene on the right leg. It didn’t look too bad live, but replays showed the ball actually hit his shin guard.
The 25-year-old paused briefly after getting hit but was able to jog down to first base.
At the time he seemed okay. Greene scored from first on an RBI double moments later when Spencer Torkelson’s hit gave Detroit its first run. He ran the bases without any visible issue.
But he didn’t take the field in the top of the third. Ben Malgeri replaced him in left field while Greene stayed in the dugout. Then in the sixth, the Tigers announced he was out for the game with right hamstring tightness – not a bruise from the HBP.
“Any time you take a guy like Riley out, there is a level of concern,” manager AJ Hinch said later on as his team went on to win 6-4. “But I have no idea. We will get up tomorrow and get him a test. When the lineup comes out tomorrow, he's not going to be on it. I'm not even going to consider it. But we will see what happens.
“Hopefully it's day to day.”
Greene has been an everyday presence for Detroit this season, playing in 116 of the team’s first 118 games. The three-time All-Star, who mostly DHs, is batting .273 with 16 homers and 54 RBIs on the year.
