Ahead of their first Europa League campaign, Bournemouth have signed Portugal defender Antonio Silva from Benfica on a deal worth about £26 million.

Bournemouth have added to their backline with the arrival of Portugal international Antonio Silva from Benfica on Saturday. Reports say the Premier League club paid around £26 million ($35 million) for the defender.

The 22-year-old centre-back is expected to fill the gap left by Marcos Senesi, who departed Bournemouth to join Tottenham Hotspur on a free transfer.

Silva made 235 appearances for Benfica across all competitions. He was also named the Primeira Liga Defender of the Year during the 2022-23 season when he helped Benfica win the league title.

He was also part of the Portugal team that won the Nations League last year.

“Despite being only 22, he has already built an outstanding level of experience at one of Europe's biggest clubs,” said Tiago Pinto, Bournemouth's president of football operations.

Bournemouth will play in Europe for the first time after qualifying for the Europa League last season. They open their Premier League campaign away at Manchester City on August 23.
