England players were said to be surprised by Thomas Tuchel’s game plan in the 2-1 World Cup semi-final defeat to Argentina.
The Three Lions went ahead through Anthony Gordon in the 55th minute. But Tuchel then reacted by bringing on multiple defensive changes.
Between Gordon’s opener and Lautaro Martinez’s stoppage-time winner, England held just 12% of possession.
The Telegraph reported that a number of England players were ‘stunned’ by Tuchel. He introduced Ezri Konsa, Dan Burn and Nico O’Reilly and set the team up defensively while leading 1-0.

Tuchel has faced heavy criticism in England for dropping deep against an Argentina side led by Lionel Messi, one of the best attacking teams in the world.
After the match, Tuchel said he had ‘no regrets’ over his tactics and that he still wants to stay on as England manager.
